Transplanting A Patio Tomato

So my wife finds a Patio Tomato plant at one of the home centers in our area and it already had a couple tomatoes turning red. She knew I had a couple empty squares in some of my raised beds so it was a no brainer that I would plant it for her. I did.

After doing some research I found that Patio Tomatoes are a determinate dwarf tomato. In other words, they won’t get much taller than two feet. Additionally, they are designed to be grown on patios. Now I’m not sure how they would know that they are actually on a patio but I guess the conditions most common to a patio environment work well for them. Another fact is that although they are of the dwarf variety their fruit tends to be a bit larger than most dwarf tomatoes.

When I transplanted the Patio Tomato I added Blood Meal, Bone Meal, Worm Castings, and Rock Dust to the soil. The Patio Tomato never skipped a beat. It just grew and produced for quite a while. Then, one day I noticed that there were no more tomatoes and I just figured it was done for the season. I even started neglecting it when it came to watering. Oddly, a couple of weeks later I noticed a couple of blooms and decided to start caring for it again. I side dressed it with fresh soil and started watering again and it wasn’t too long before more blooms starting showing up. Even as Halloween looms around the corner and the weather has cooled considerably, the Patio Tomato is still producing bigger than golf ball sized tomatoes. Who’d a thunk it?

Conclusion

The Patio Tomato seems to be a pretty hardy plant. I wouldn’t fill my garden with them, but next season I will definitely grow a few more. Oh and by the way, they are tasty little buggers. Yummy!
