Home Defensive Strategies
Hardening Your Home Defense
Stay Home And Defend
Today were going to talk about defensive concepts in WROL or SHTF situations, specifically if you're going to shelter in place which I advocate that you do. If you're planning on evacuating somewhere you're still going to have to shelter in place until things have calmed down enough and are safe enough for you to move out. If you are planning to bug out you better have a preplanned place to go with a cache of supplies. Once you leave your shelter or home you become a plaything for the fates, so have a plan.
Plan Your Defense With Hardened Layers
When you are planning the defense of your home, think about defense in depth. Imagine poking a water balloon with a pin and it just comes apart. On the other hand, you cannot shatter a bowling ball with an ax very easily. It's all about the mass of the perimeter. The water balloon is thin and easy to pop because it's all at the exterior, whereas the bowling ball is made up of solid layers layer after layer. So be sure to have some depth in your home defense plans.
Pillage Your Own House First
Your first layer of defense should be a camouflage of some sort that makes your home look unattractive to would be looters. If your house is lit up like a Christmas tree, and the scent of bacon is coming off your stove, your house will become a quick target for the hungry and cold. Concentrate on making your house look like a place that no one wants to go. Make it look like it has already been looted.
Deny, Channelize, And Disrupt
In defensive thinking there is a concept of deny, channelize, and disrupt. You want to deny points of access to the opposition. Make it virtually impossible to get up driveways, through doors, and windows etc. The points of access that you do allow them to get through should be designed as a channel or funnel. This will make it easier for you to counter their entry into your home. Additionally, put things in place that will disrupt their entry such as pits, traps, treble hooks hanging down from the ceiling, and anything that will slow them down and put them on the defense. This will give you time to mount an offense.
Sneak Around Your Neighborhood
Now in a world gone mad shtf scenario you will not just be sitting around huddled in your house. You should be out patrolling with a sense of light noise discovery discipline so you can be sneaky about coming and going. But, you need to be out there. If you are out and about you can exploit opportunities as they arise. For example, if you discover the dead out there you can strip them of their valuable items or anything else you may find on your patrols. This is not to advocate looting other people's homes or stores unless of course they've been abandoned. Patrolling also affords you the ability to gather intelligence about the environment or neighborhood that you are in. It is also part of your defense because you are pushing out from your base and you can know if something is coming or not.
Be The Team Leader
An additional advantage in your defensive planning is to team up with other like-minded individuals. This will make it easier to maintain around-the-clock patrols and provide time for others to sleep without relaxing security. The more people you can bring into your defensive sphere the better. However, remember you will need food and water supplies for them as well. It is better to connect and plan with these people before an SHTF scenario so everyone is already on board when the shit hits the fan. Ideally, all families involved will be planning and preparing beforehand so that everyone can benefit.
A Shotgun And A Barrel Of Fish
Finally, the best weapon for home defense would be the 12gauge shotgun with two and three-quarter triple 000 buckshot. This strategy goes back to the channelizing defense concept where you get them bottled in and it will be like shooting fish in a barrel. That is what you want rather than having to patrol throughout your house. The bad guys are all funneled into one area.
Avoid The Sniper
Another thing to remember is that the harder you make it for the bad guy to get in, the harder you make it for yourself to escape. Don't box yourself in, plan for ways to get out. For example, don't go out doors or windows but plan a pre-scored wall that you can bust through if needed. Never go through a door or window whether entering or exiting because they will be booby-trapped, monitored, or have a sniper trained on them.
Conclusion
Make your home look unattractive by any means possible. You really have to think out of the box on this one. For example, if you find the dead on the street, drag them to your porch, or whatever you can think of. The point is to make your house the most uninviting house on the block. Additionally, make all efforts to stay in your home. If you abandon your home in an shtf situation, the odds are someone will move into it and you will never get back in.
