Low Cost Rust Removal
If for whatever reason you find that your firearm has acquired some rust, usfreedom22 offers this quick tip. Head to The Home Depot and pick up some fine steel wool. Grade #0000 is what usfreedom22 recommends. Next you can use your favorite firearm lubricant and saturate a silicone rag with it. Usfreedom22 recommends using the oil soaked silicone rag to wipe your firearm down after cleaning. This not only protects your gun from moisture and humidity but helps to eliminate rusty fingerprints that can show up after cleaning as well.
If however, you do find rust on your firearm you can use the steel wool to rub the rust away. If you catch it in time you may be able to avoid pitting and residue. Once you are satisfied that the rust is removed, use the oil soaked silicone rag to wipe the area which helps to protect that area.
Be careful not to be too abrasive with the steel wool because you don’t want to cause any damage. Just work lightly and be sure that you have done all you can before applying the lubricant with the silicone rag. The lubricant will hide the rust if it hasn’t all been removed. The remaining rust can continue to do damage.
